This long, lifeless hallway in the closed hospital on the grounds of Ellis Island seem endless. An open door is a reminder that immigrants confided in this hospital had come to the United States to seek a new way of life. Being sick when they arrived their future was in limbo. Some would recover, others would be sent back to their homeland, and the rest did not leave the island as they succumbed to illness. History tells us immigrants coming to the United States were seeking a new start. Many were to join other relatives who had already established homes in America; others would strike out on their own, seeking opportunities to begin a new chapter in their lives. This image is a visual of their long journey which began with the hope there was a light at the end and a place where open doorways would replace their past challenges.
